Digital deejaying has skyrocketed in popularity over the past five years and it's no wonder why. Compared to a full vinyl setup with all the hardware and physical media it requires, an MP3-based mixing station is extremely simple and cheap. There's even free software to get you started, and one of the most popular programs available is Virtual DJ.
Virtual DJ is often packaged with USB-based hardware mixing consoles from the likes of Hercules and Numark, and, in fact, if you really want to delve into the full array of features, such devices are going to be a necessity--and they'll require a $99 license fee to upgrade to the Pro version of the software. That said, you can download the app for free by itself and make very basic mixes and playlists.
While the program isn't specifically geared at newbies, it is intuitive enough for a musically inclined individual to use right off the bat. Once installed, Virtual DJ automatically populates a folder tree in the bottom left corner where you can easily access your music collection. The bottom middle serves as a tabbed, multifunction area where you can browse tracks, sample music bites, add effects, and make recordings.
The top of the window is dominated by two digital turntables, which are distinguished by color: blue on the left and red on the right. Each one has the ability to cue, loop, adjust pitch, scratch, and shift (among other features). In the middle is the mixing console, where you can adjust the gain and master volume, as well as transition between the two tracks. Once the songs have been dragged and dropped into the console, a bar along the top displays the sound waves of each to help with visual mixing. There's also a video input option that lets you create montages to the music.
The stylish interface and high number of features score points, but learning how to use the program is a hit-or-miss proposition. To be perfectly honest, using it without mixing hardware (that is, just a mouse and keyboard) is a challenge, and not one we enjoyed, so we recommend hooking up a compatible USB controller. Also worth a look: the thorough online user guide.
Virtual DJ is free, fully featured, and well-laid-out. It's a useful option both for aspiring mixers and newbies.

"Good overall player. Not for beginners."
by Cool Man on March 15, 2011
Pros: It does what it says it can do. But a simple program like Foobar2000 with its multiple playlist capability (simultaneously) can do, aside from the effects.
Cons: Too much graphics. Confusing features (for some of them). Confusing and poor logic in the playlist (actually the entire bottom of the program).
Excessively high price for the pro version.
Summary: Virtual DJ looks complex and overwhelming to the beginner.
    Its learning curve is slow.
The price of the pro version is excessive.
I'll stick with the very simple, effective, and free TPlayer, although its limited on features, but it does a very good job.

    "Pretty Cool!"
    by techjunkie1980 on March 11, 2011
Pros: Fairly easy to understand and use.
Cons: The free version is a good start but the price goes up if you want to go deeper. I just theink the price is a little too high.
Summary: I was just a little curious how hard it could be after searching for a local DJ for a school dance coming up. This was one of the top recommended programs, and I can see why. I t was fairly simple to understand and within just a few minutes I was having my own little party at my PC. The free version is a good start but the price goes up if you want to go deeper. I just think the Pro price is a little too high.

Pros: Clean interface and easy virtual turntable options (2, 4, at a time)
    Cons: too early to tell

"I am really liking VDJ this time."
by jparriott on March 11, 2011
Pros: Seems fairly simple to use. Sound is good.
Cons: I still have a lot of Itunes music and not all will read. Don't like the way the library is set up its kinda difficult and loses some things.I think the price is way too much too but most are.
Summary: I do like VDJ and suggest it to anyone who wants to get in to DJ'n off your computer. I have the free version and am saving to purchase the Pro version. I highly recommend it! My star might go up after I get the Pro version!

"This Is a very effective tool for the home D.J.!"
by stoneaffects on April 6, 2011
Pros: Very decsent effects.Easy to use, Play with it for a while and you will be syncing your tunes like a pro. Fun to add effects and overdubbing and its starts getting addictive. Really cool software!
Cons: You will want to go pro for the added goodies after a while the base program seems not to have enough effects. Price of pro is steep but in my opinion rocks! The black skin I find hard to see.Options on some different colours on back drop would help!
Summary: Try it out for free you haven't anything to loose, you might find yourself pleasantly surprized. I downloaded this progame because, I bought a creative notebook sounblaster for my laptop. wich was overrun with thousands of mp3's. I combined this with a pair of wharfedale amplified 100 watt diamond 8.2s and started dj ing alot my friends partys. With portable pro sound for very little cash and lugging It was efortless, pounds a very big punch while taking up very little room and this programe made it all possible! I think anyone will have alot of fun with It!
